Student Guidelines

USH cares about the homestay experience that its hosts and students share. We provide guidelines to assist students with the transition of living with someone new and being a considerate guest in your homestay.

International students who participate in an American homestay must be willing to learn about and accept possible differences in America’s multi-cultural society, women’s rights, freedom of speech, etc…

Do not bring other guests into the home without having your host’s permission to do so.

Overnight guests in your homestay is NOT ALLOWED.

Do not duplicate your host’s house keys under any circumstances.

If you have requested room with meals, please contact your host if you should arrive late or do not plan to eat the prepared meal. Please ask your host if you have a curfew. Some hosts do not allow students to come home after a certain time if it is very late at night.

Always ask your host if you are unsure about something such as how to use a kitchen appliance, where the bus stop is, etc…

Make sure to turn off the lights in your room with your leave and lock the doors to your home every time you leave.

You are responsible to do your own laundry. Please make sure you consult with your host family about when and how you should do your laundry. Laundry can typically be done 1-2 weeks so make sure to bring enough clothes for at least one week.

Phone calls - If you need to make an out of state or international call, you will need to purchase a calling card. Calling cards can be purchased at convenience stores such as 7-11, at the post office, or supermarkets. Please speak to your host before using the phone and set up times when it will be convenient both for you and your host for you to use the phone.

IF you are sharing your bathroom with the host family, please speak to your family about appropriate times when you should shower and for how long. Please try to occupy the bathroom for a reasonable amount of time. It is your responsibility to bring your own personal supplies such as toothbrush, toothpaste, body wash, shampoo, towel, etc.

Cleanliness – you are expected to keep your room and bathroom reasonably clean and organized at all times.

No drinking of alcoholic beverages and no usage of drugs are allowed in the host family’s house.

If you are a smoker, please always smoke outside the home.

For extensions, you must contact USH before your scheduled move out date. The same late fees for housing apply for extension payments.

Any information USH sends to you is only intended for your use and may contain information that is privileged and confidential. You, the recipient, are obligated to maintain it in a safe, secure, and confidential manner.
